Will expensive underlay provide sound proofing too?

I’m about to re-carpet my sons room and would like to give it a bit of sound proofing from downstairs. I was wondering would expensive underlay be suffice or will I need to buy something else? If I have to buy something else what would this be and how much would it cost. Many thanks
