The trick to sound proofing is to find a material that is as different as possible from the material that your walls are made of. Something thick and squishy/soft would probably work best - but try to get something that's not puffy because it's just full of air - you need some substance.

If you could get ahold of a couple of mattresses to lean against the wall(s) you share with the neighbors, this would do the trick (although it might not look too pretty, it's only necessary until your kitty gets older and chills out a bit).

Also, it's most important to cover the level of the wall that the sound waves hit most directly. If your kitty stands oin the floor and looks straight ahead or slightly downward when she meows, you should focus on the lower part of the wall(s). (The upper part won't be hit as hard by her meowing sounds.) But if she gets on top of a bunkbed or in a loft and then screams, the upper part of the wall will need to be covered as well.

The other thing would be to hang a couple of thick comforters on the wall (you could use halfway nice-looking ones that don't look weird together). You can get old, cheap comforters at a Goodwill or Salvation Army store, and then you can donate them back when you're finished with them. Rubber floor covering (like you see at gyms) would be even better though.

Best of luck to you and your kitty!

HA! I hear you. When I first got my cat she was 10 weeks old and pets were not permitted in my apartment building either. (They are now). Actually, a cat meowing normally is not that loud. Turn on a radio when you leave the apartment. Do you have a trusted friend living beside you or above you or below you? Ask them if they can hear your cat. I got away with it for 2 years, then the pet policy changed. Oh, be weary of maintenance people.

You can do as Gabrielle suggested, egg cartons insulate well. Or you might just keep some music or the tv on to help drown out the sound.

Good, cheap sound proofing is egg cartons (the side that the eggs sit in).....you stick a whole heap to your wall (so that it covers the whole thing) and presto you have sound proofing :D
